Day 11 - View to east on 'Crête d'Otchogorri' on the border, with the first rays of sun on 'Otchogorrigagna' (1,923 m). To the left of the picture 'Port Uthu' (1,664 m), my first goal on this beautiful morning. In the middle, the cabin of the shepherd I talked to last evening, 'Cayolar d'Ardané Gagnekoa' (1,330 m).
While cows block my way, 'Port Uthu' (1,664 m) becomes more visible.
Looking back westward to say goodbye to that really nice cabin in 'Vallon d'Ardané'. Even this cow looks a bit sad........, or is that my imagination?
While going up to 'Port Uthu' (1,664 m), looking backwards to the west, you get again a very fine view on 'Pic d'Orhy' (2,017 m), where I passed yesterday, now completely in the clear.
An 'Isard' (Pyrenean Chamoix) taking off when I approach. I did not see many this trip, maybe since they seem to be present only above about 1,500 m. where it is more quiet.
Border marker number 247 marks 'Port Uthu' or 'Uthurourdinétako Portilloua' (1,664 m). The summit of 'Chardékagagna' (1,893 m) is still partly blocking the morning sun in the east.
Looking back to west from 'Port Uthu' (1,664 m), a goodbye to 'Pic d'Orhy' (2,017 m). Yesterday the summit was in clouds.
A Spanish cow, still enjoying her breakfast, in front of 'Chardékagagna' (1,893 m), on the border to eastnortheast. The second summit, more close, is 1,881 m.
After crossing the border once more into France at 'Chotako Lépoua' (1,696 m), a narrow 'Brêche' in the border ridge, you pass again a metal gate to keep the animals where they are supposed to be. On the right 'Pic de Belhay' (1,771 m). You can vaguely see the HRP trail skirting the mountain. After passing 'Pic de Belhay' it will turn to the right to 'Port de Belhay' (1,732 m), where you enter Spain again.
Breathtaking view to east at 'Port de Belhay' (1,732 m) on snow covered mountains. I can identify 'Pic d'Anie' (2,504 m), Pic (and Table) des 3 Rois' (2,444 m) and 'Pic d'Ansabère' (2,374 m), and.....
...backwards, now really for the last time, 'Pic d'Orhy' (2,017 m), between, right, Chardékagagna' (1,893 m), and, partly, 'Otchogorrigagna' 1,923 m).
When I get a bit lower, 'Pic Bimbaleta' (1,758 m), left, becomes more prominent in front of me.
Words cannot describe reality here. How beautiful. Pictures could be used as postcards........
Again, 'Pic Bimbaleta' (1,758 m).
Pic Bimbaleta' (1,758 m).
The already vandalised former 'Refugio de Belagua' (1,428 m). I'm afraid, when they closed shop some years ago, it was forever! Further to east you see, I think, 'Pic d'Ansabère' (2,374 m), right, and 'Pic (and Table) des 3 Rois' (2,444 m).
While I'm having a quiet lunch at a small stream close to that old 'Refugio de Belagua' (1,428 m), a huge tribe of cows decided to use the same source to drink as where I was sitting. Anyhow, I still could make some nice pictures of some of the intruders, like this mother and calf, drinking from her own private source.
When going east, after 'Refugio de Belagua', you first pass a forest, then you enter a carstic kind of unrealistic landscape, with to the left the 'Sierra de Anelarra', all very dry in summer, before arriving at the mountain range bordering France.
I hope the pictures give a flavour of this interesting but in fog pretty dangerous environment. In any case, even on this beautiful day, I am glad that on the Spanish side the trail is well marked with red/white signs.
Finally, I arrive at 'Col d'Anaye' or 'Collado de Insole' (2,045 m), between 'Picos de Anelarra' (2,349 m) to the north and 'Table des 3 Rois' (2,444 m) to the south. Direction 'Lescun' is to the east, further into France again. That far is for tomorrow, my last day.
Going down eastwards, also on this French side of the border, an impressive landscape.
Bivouac at the end of a fantastic day 11 at 'Source de Marmitou' (1,851 m), between 'Pic d'Anie' (2,504 m) to north and 'Pics de Pène Blanque' (2,385 m) to south. A quiet, beautiful spot with running water all around, right from the snow. And that landscape........
Day 12 - View from 'Source de Marmitou'(1,851 m) down the valley to east, direction 'Lescun' (900 m). In the middle of the picture 'Pic de la Breque' (1,629 m).
The 'Cabanes d'Anaye' (1,510 m), at the feet of 'Montagne de Lhurs' in the south. The huts are face to ass, probably to avoid early morning confrontations between neighbours. The shepherds still did not arrive for the new season.
A remarkably shaped rock.......
Looking down on 'Pla de Sanchèse' (1,090 m) with some crossing streams and a road. When I arrived there, I was not sure which direction of that road to take to 'Lescun' (900 m), since my map was not detailed enough. I decided to take the one to the left, although it was going up initially. When a car passed, I finally received confirmation that I was on the right track.
View around 'Pic de la Breque' (1,629 m) to north on 'Les Orgues de Camplong', that interesting mountain range which I passed alongside on my first day, in fog, while going west.
'Le Billare' (2,309 m), seen to southwest from 'Pla de Sanchèse' (1,090 m).
'Le Billare' (2,309 m), виден на югозападе с 'Pla de Sanchèse' (1,090 m).
The 'Cirque de Lescun', an impressive 180° range of mountains, west of the still authentic mountain village 'Lescun' (900 m).
Opposite traffic on my way direction my parked car southwest of 'Lescun' (900 m). They seem to know their way, since nobody is guiding them.
Once back at my car, I now can see the beautiful view to the northwest, with 'Le Billare' (2,309 m) prominently visible.
While I am enjoying the view around and on 'Lescun' (900 m) to the northeast, before driving home, a tribe of sheep pass, running behind a shepherd in an old, shabby car. At the end of the line an old Pyrenean Shepherd dog (Patou), who has more interest in my mountain shoes than in those beautiful sheep. Do I have to wonder, why......?
